The UK was today warned it should invest more in the development of low-carbon technologies if it is to achieve ambitious targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

Details of £34m of cuts on low-carbon technology were published by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) today as part of £6.2bn savings across Whitehall.

One of the government's leading science and environment advisers today won a prestigious international green award, the Blue Planet Prize.

Climate Committee Considering Carbon Capture

The Government should extend its programme to develop technology that will trap carbon emissions from coal-fired plants to include gas power stations, it was urged.

The Committee on Climate Change said efforts to tackle global warming required reducing emissions from electricity generation to almost zero by 2030, which should rule out new conventional gas-fired power stations after 2020.

Design for Future Climate Competition: Technology Strategy Board

Building designers are being invited to bid for a total of £2.5m to devise ways to adapt buildings to be resilient to a changing climate. The funding comes from the Technology Strategy Board, which will invest a further £2.4m in 2011. The programme aims to build the capacity of the building community to respond to demands for climate adaptation services. The competition opens on 14 June, with a deadline of 22 July. Can nature mitigate oil spills?

President Obama says that he holds BP fully responsible for the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, which he said was potentially an "unprecedented environmental disaster". Fellow of the Institute of Economic Affairs Richard North and senior climate advisor for Greenpeace Charlie Kronick, debate the long-term effect of the oil spill on wildlife, fisheries, and the tourism industry.

Should we give Nestle or Orangutans a break?

Greenpeace has started an international action to expose Nestlé’s role in the destruction of the last remaining forests and peatlands of Indonesia. Greenpeace says that the crime file shows that Nestlé is buying palm oil from suppliers that are rapidly expanding their plantations into rainforest areas – killing orang-utans and accelerating climate change in the process. Nestle, on the other side, says they are highly concerned about deforestation in Indonesia and other countries, and they support a moratorium on the destruction of rainforests.

Your Voice - Results From Our First Trials

The Closed User Group (CUG) trials in Luton and South Yorkshire have now finished and the WAVE Team are preparing for a full national and european launch of the platform.  Whilst these preperations are underway we thought we's share with you some of the findings from the debates that we have sent to local Councillors and MP's in the Luton and South Yorkshire region.
